A leader is someone who has amazing clarity on their vision (in other words, they know the way). A leader is someone who takes that clarity and follows the vision they have (in other words, they go the way). And, a leader is someone who helps others to find their purpose, plan, and vision (in other words, they show the way).

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

John Maxwell

A Leader Knows the Way

You cannot take others on a journey with an unknown destination. Know where you are going, and how you are going to get there. As the leader, you must have clarity but don’t get stuck waiting for the perfect time to get going.

You will have to change your approach along the way so make sure that “the way” remains known to those you’re leading. That only happens through clear communication and establishing buy-in on any course correction.

A Leader Goes the Way

Never ask anyone to do something you won’t do yourself. If you’re questioning whether you’d do it, go do it first, then you’re free to ask someone else to do the same. This is the way leaders live, If I ask you to do something you can rest easy knowing that I’ve already done it myself.

A Leader Shows the Way

We’re all on this journey of life. Some people have stepped into the light and some are still in darkness. There is only one path that will take you to where there is light. In this world of darkness, it’s the leader who has a flashlight. Over the years you discovered the way out of the darkness and into the light. The moment you enter the light, you see a flashlight right in front of you. A great leader shines that light back toward the people so there path can be illuminated as well.

Helping others to learn and understand the way of a leader is what it’s all about.
